This piece was inspired by the Trail Of Tears. The design is based on Cherokee wampum belts, which traditionally served as historical documents and were instrumental in diplomatic affairs. I used negative space and visceral fibers to highlight gaps in the Cherokee narrative and how history has attempted to censor their voice in the controlled telling of this forced migration.
This tapestry is part of the collection I'm creating for an exhibition at Surface Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina for October, 2016.
